The culminating achievement of students graduating from AIS, the IB Diploma Program (DP) represents more than a proven pathway to some of the finest and careers; it’s the pathway to students becoming lifelong learners and caring, well-rounded human beings making a difference in the world.
Building on the attitudes, concepts, knowledge, skills and action developed in the Primary Years and Middle Years Programs, the Diploma Program provides students in grades 11 and 12 with a depth and breadth of courses that enable them to hit the ground running when they reach college.
In the DP, students take six subjects from the groups outlined below
Three at Standard Level (SL) and three at Higher Level (HL)
We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.
We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyze and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.
We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.
We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.
We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives— intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

These six academic subjects are centered around three core principles.
Through this mandatory course, students further hone their critical thinking skills and develop as learners and human beings. The course encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we claim to know what we know.
The extended essay is a 4,000-word, university-level essay for which students select and investigate a topic of special interest to them (and that’s related to one of their six DP subjects). In this year-long project, students learn to self-manage their work as well as to research, analyze and synthesize knowledge at an advanced level.
Students have a curricular requirement to regularly give back to the community throughout the two-year DP program and do so in ways representing being creative (artistic activities), being active (physical activities) and performing a service (community service).
No prior language experience is needed before students join the IB Diploma Program. Language options exist for students of all experience levels, from beginners to bilingual students.
The IBDP is awarded at the end of the second year based on students’ performance on written examinations (judged by external examiners). Success in the IBDP exams can also result in students receiving generous college credits.
The IB Diploma Program is highly valued by colleges and universities all around the world, by employers and by DP students themselves. Our IB graduates consistently enjoy higher acceptance rates at top universities and frequently tell us how well prepared they feel for college.
